1. Oil independence is a matter of national security. We are totally dependant on the wares of OPEC and other oil-producing countries, many of which don’t like us. If they cut us off or drive up the price even higher, we’ll be in an even worse predicament. We can’t let other nations have that much control over our destiny. We have to find a way to meet our own fuel needs and ethanol is the fastest and friendliest way to do that.

2. Oil is a limited resource. It’s going to run out eventually. In the meantime, it’s getting harder to find and more expensive to extract. Despite short term fluctuations, in the long run, oil prices will continue to rise. How expensive does it have to get before we wake up?

3. It’s renewable for goodness sakes! You don’t have a limited supply buried deep in a mountain or under an ocean. You have a sustainable crop you can grow again next year. Agribusinesses large and small will rise to meet the challenge. And if there’s one thing the U.S. has in abundance, it’s land. It’s the perfect way to use our own resources to make our own fuel.

4. Ethanol is a proven and growing technology. It’s not even a new technology. Henry Ford used a kind of ethanol to power his early autos. And Brazil has proven it’s a cost-effective strategy today. Not only are they self-sufficient, they’re leading the way to a new global industry which could really benefit the economies of Central and South America. We should add North America to that list.

5. This bill solves the distribution problem. The biggest obstacle to E-85 is the infrastructure needed to distribute it. This bill gives incentives to retailers to upgrade their pumps and makes it illegal for oil companies to interfere. It also jump-starts the commercial market by making E-85 available to the public at federal fueling depots.

6. It makes Flex Fuel Vehicles readily available. This is not new technology. Both General Motors and Ford have been producing FFVs for the South American market for years. With a financial incentive to incorporate this feature into new U.S. vehicles, the transition should be relatively seamless and we will have a fleet prepared to use E-85 as it becomes more available.

7. Ethanol is environmentally friendly. When you burn it, there are fewer greenhouse gases emitted. Estimates say from 30 to 38% fewer toxins are released into the atmosphere including the deadly benzene. And that’s with corn-based ethanol. When we upgrade to cellulosic, we can cut fossil fuels use by 40% and reduce greenhouse gases by as much as 89%. So we’re addressing global warming at the same time we’re becoming energy independent.

8. Cellulosic will solve the impact on food supplies. This bill helps us move away from the corn-based ethanol that’s been playing havoc with food and feed prices and use plant and animal materials that are not needed in the food chain. This cellulosic focus not only protects food supplies, it delivers higher net energy benefits, yielding 2 to 3 times more energy than corn. Plus we can use many materials we currently consider waste making ethanol the epitome of recycling.

9. We’re almost there. Already E-10 has helped flatten U.S. demand for oil. Flex Fuel Vehicles are relatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture. Biorefineries are popping up everywhere. And with $4 gasoline, E-85 is becoming a more competitive choice every day. We have to stay the course and steady this emerging market like Brazil did if we want to reap the same rewards. And once the economies of scale kick in, the price of ethanol will come down and this solution will become even more cost effective.

10. It’s good for the economy. Imagine if we kept that $700 billion we spend on imported oil at home. What if we paid farmers and recyclers to produce crops for ethanol and employed skilled workers in biorefineries to turn it into fuel? It would certainly have a dramatic impact on our trade deficit at the same time it put people to work. We might even grow our way out of this economic mess and energy crisis at the same time.
